Tallahassee Police Department Achieves Law Enforcement Reaccreditation

Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation Awards TPD with Excelsior Recognition

The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) has been reaccredited by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) with Excelsior Recognition for the second time in six years. Excelsior is the highest level of sustained achievement that can be awarded to an agency.

"Accreditation is a rigorous process, and this news from CFA is fantastic. Achieving Excelsior status reaffirms what we know about TPD's high standards for professionalism and ability," City Manager Reese Goad said. "I'd like to specially commend Chief Lawrence Revell and Lt. Isaac Boykin for leading the department's participation in another successful accreditation process."

TPD was examined by an assessment team from the CFA, which, in line with its accreditation standards, conducted an in-depth review of all aspects of the agency's policies, procedures, management, operations and support services, including:

• establishment of agency goals and objectives with provisions for periodic updating;
• re-evaluation of whether agency resources are being used in accord with agency goals, objectives and mission;
• re-evaluation of agency policies and procedures, especially as documented in the agency's written directive system;
• correction of internal deficiencies and inefficiencies before they become public problems; and
• the opportunity to re-organize without the appearance of personal attacks.

"The Tallahassee Police Department is proud to be one of the longest-tenured, internationally accredited law enforcement agencies in the country," Police Chief Revell said. "Maintaining compliance with professionally accepted standards and achieving Excelsior Recognition is a testament to the exceptional service the agency provides to our community each day."

The Tallahassee Police Department has maintained its accredited status with CFA since 2002. The department has also been continuously accredited with the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for 37 years.
