Fifth Class Completes City Farm TLH Urban Farming and Entrepreneurship Training Program
May 23, 2023
With the recent completion of the spring 2023 City Farm TLH Urban Farming and Entrepreneurship program, 21 more participants can add this achievement to their respective resumes. Since the first training session began in 2021, nearly 80 residents have completed the intensive 12-week program. The course covers topics such as sustainable growing methods, crop management, marketing and business financing, in addition to on-site learning opportunities at local farms, including the pilot site for City Farm TLH in the Greater Bond neighborhood.
"The City Farm TLH project is an innovative approach to address food insecurity while fostering neighborhood revitalization, and doing so in a way that incorporates sustainability, resiliency and economic empowerment. Through public and private partnerships, the City has graduated nearly 80 residents from this training program with many going on to further their urban farming education through apprenticeships," City Commissioner Curtis Richardson said.
In October 2020, the City of Tallahassee began development of a pilot urban farm on a vacant, underutilized, City-owned parcel in Greater Bond. The farm serves as a training location for aspiring urban farmers and a source for fresh produce for the surrounding neighborhood. As part of the City Farm TLH project, the Urban Farming and Entrepreneurship training program in partnership with Tallahassee Community College's Wakulla Environmental Institute and local farms helps provide participants with the knowledge to launch their own small farm in an urban setting.
